BEACON, NY
The City of Beacon, NY was once called Matteawan and was located along the Fishkill Creek.
Matteawan was a manufacturing town. In 1913 Matteawan and Fishkill Landing were combined and incorporated into the City of Beacon.
The photo on the left is a reproduction of a turn of the century postcard, showing a view of the Hat Factories from the Fishkill Creek.
The photo on the right is also a reproduction of a postcard of Main Street in Beacon (which at the time was still known as Matteawan) showing Mt. Beacon.
It was on the mountain that the fires were set to warn the Revolutionary Armies of British Troop movement. The mountain became knows as Mt. Beacon and when Matteawan and Fishkill Landing were combinded, the newly incorporated city was named Beacon.
